Is it Time to Upgrade your Business Card?

business card designIt’s no secret that a business card is a business essential. A well-designed card, handed out freely, can attract business. A poorly designed card, however, can actually drive people away. Given the ever-increasing competition for a consumer’s attention, perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate your current business card to see if it’s getting the right kind of attention.

Your first step is to be sure the information is up to date. Did your phone number or address change? Did you add a website or change your email address? Do you want people to know about your new blog or other social media site? Do not fall into the common trap of thinking, “I’ll update this next time I order cards.” The whole point of handing out business cards is to make it easy for potential customers to contact you. Do you really want a customer calling a number that’s incorrect or contacting you at an email address you never check? It will cost you less to order more business cards than it will to lose a customer.

Once you’ve checked your contact information, consider the design. If you still use the same business card design you had 10 years ago, it may be in need of a re-design. Old-fashioned fonts or outdated graphics may send a message that your products or services are not keeping up with technology or current trends. If you have a photo, does it reflect your current line of products? What about your logo? Could it use an overhaul? A skilled graphic designer can give your business logo a more modern look without changing the overall design.

Another thing to consider is the paper on which your card is printed. Business cards are very easy to print from home. Many business owners do just that, thinking they’re saving time and money by printing them themselves. But cheap paper and home-printed cards send the message that you don’t take your business seriously, or that you’re not successful enough to afford professional business cards. A heavy cardstock with a glossy finish says that you take pride in your business and that you care about quality.

Now comes something that causes many business owners to balk; hiring a professional designer. Yes, there are pre-designed templates available online from many companies. But a template is not the only thing you need to consider. Graphic designers don’t just know about how to use Photoshop or what colors look good together. They understand how font sizes and design can influence a customer. They know how to make the best use of a small space. They understand print design and how to create quality images and graphics. So is it important to hire a professional? Of course. Just because you can buy plumbing supplies at the hardware store doesn’t mean you should do your own plumbing. The same thinking applies here. Just because you have an unlimited number of templates and fonts to play with doesn’t mean you should design your own business cards. If you want a professional and effective business card, you should hire a professional to design it. Consult with one of our designers today.

It’s time to take a good look at your current business card and see if it needs improvement. Show it to strangers and ask them to tell you honestly what impression it makes. Would they call you if they needed your services? Like all marketing tools, your business cards need to be re-evaluated from time to time, and updated frequently. When you weigh the importance of your business card as a lead-generating business tool, the cost of quality design and printing is well worth the money.
