What is a responsive website?
A responsive website is a site that reacts automatically to different devices and different screen sizes. This not only means that all elements of your website will be flexible and look great across all media, but you can also customize which elements show on different devices and how they display. There are two main techniques for designing responsive websites, although most sites use a mixture of both. There are a lot of great reasons to go responsive with your website:
- No need for a secondary mobile site
- Save money on extra design and upkeep
- Save time on content management
- Driven by CSS, saves on load times
- Looks great on mobile and web
- Device-specific page elements
Fluid responsive design is when we expect the elements of the page to automatically stretch in relation to the screen size. This means if we were to stretch our screen or browser, the elements would constantly be changing to fit the screen – for instance when you tilt your phone from Portrait to Landscape orientation. Fluid responsive sites are great for lightweight, clean websites.
Fixed width responsive design is when we expect the elements to be at a set width and react to the screen size. So, depending on which resolution is detected, the width would change accordingly. This is normally the best option for larger, more complex designed websites.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS). A CMS gives you the ability to independently keep your sites updated easily, without the need to know anything about coding. Although we may utilize a theme for it’s base features, all of our WordPress themes are 100% unique designs.
You’re in good company if you use WordPress for your website. Many famous blogs, news outlets, music sites, Fortune 500 companies and celebrities are using WordPress (Yes! Really!). For example, Mashable and TechCrunch are both on WordPress. Even news outlets like The New York Times’ blogs and CNN’s on-air personality blogs all use WordPress, too. If you’re ever curious who else uses WordPress, head on over to the WordPress site showcase…You’ll be impressed by the number of well-known sites and famous people using it to power their websites!
What is Search Engine Optimization?
At its most basic, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a means of getting your website to appear at the top of search engine results. For example, if a customer goes to an Internet search engine like Google or Bing and types in “hanover salon” you would want your beauty salon to appear on the first page of results the customer sees in your area. Where your content appears in the search results is called PageRank. Your website’s SEO strategies will determine where you appear in that PageRank.
There are many different approaches to creating good SEO. One of the most important of these approaches is keywords. Keywords are words or phrases in your website content, image names, page titles, descriptions, and site map that show what your business is about. Good keywords will closely match the way a customer would search for you in the search engines. In the above beauty salon example, good keywords would be: hanover beauty salon, beauty salon in hanover, beauty salon, manicure, pedicure, etc. While keyword strategies can get complicated, understanding the basics and applying them to your website content will help your SEO in the long run.
